Here is a marketing flyer for a brand new collection hosted in the Albuquerque Sign Language Academy Library. This library is a gem in the making, as the school opens Fall 2010. The Deaf Core collection is geared to individuals who want to explore the Deaf World, deaf identities, manual languages, etc. Scope of this special collection includes all aspects of hearing loss -both oral and manual philosophies. I created this flyer for the Collection Development class through TWU (LS 5003, Dr Akin, SPR 2010).

Thanks to one of my _most caring_ library users, who just notified me, I can immediately share with all of you the national coverage given the "Beyond Books" impact of libraries in this recession that aired on this morning's Today Show. This is certainly an issue that is not restricted to public libraries. I am glad to see that the importance of libraries is being given this kind of attention.

The ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services has created a number of useful tool kits, which are accessible from its OLOS Toolkit Directory. These tool kits address a wide range of topics, from how to assist non-English speakers and older adults, to how to support and advocate for rural and small libraries and tribal libraries, to gaming in libraries.

C9 Internet Website Competency

Searching on Kartoo, I found a reputable website created to encourage and support academic libraries’ promotional efforts. This website is created by the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL). They provide resources to help you develop a marketing campaign for your own library and examples of ACRL's efforts to promote academic and research libraries nationally. Resources contain advocacy tool kits, trainer series, and informational slideshows. I think I will find great use of these resources as we build our marketing plan this summer and will return to it again and again as I implement and improve our campaigns.

C8 Multimedia Competency: Video

On Google Video I searched for (academic library outreach). Among the many results, I found a video of President Obama visiting a local library in Philadelphia. Barack Obama Visits the Free Library of Philadelphia . Posted on December 24, 2008 by the Philidelphia Public Library: http://www.library.phila.gov/ (This clip is posted on youtube...but found while trying to avoid youtube altogether. Youtube is a leading communication tool for libraries.)
President Obama is talking about the value of libraries in the community as being the center of communities dating all the way back to Alexandria. “Libraries are a refuge of learning…” responsible for opening doors of opportunities for all people to gain knowledge. He says it is vital that libraries are funded and that we commit to libraries to ensure our nation is an educated one. Our country is not built on few people having the knowledge, but rather on the majority having the knowledge and opportunity to reach any goal. How does this relate to marketing? The President of the United States is personally identifying libraries as a center of community learning. This public message supports the Library's mission to no end.
